B4 Computer Kits
Providing students with a clear understanding of the foundations of computing is a central aim of the Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies. The B4 Learning System addresses this by helping students explore the fundamental building blocks of digital systems. It supports teaching across core strands of the curriculum — from how data is represented and processed, to how algorithms work — while making abstract concepts like binary numbers, variables, and program design concrete and accessible.
The B4 consists of modular components that represent the essential functions of a computer — binary counting, arithmetic, memory, graphics, and more. With these modules, students carry out guided experiments that gradually build into more sophisticated hardware and software arrangements, mirroring the development of real computers.
Because the B4 operates at human speed, students can observe, control, and understand processes that normally happen invisibly inside the “black box” of their smartphones, tablets, or laptops. Each B4 kit includes comprehensive handbooks (developed by computing experts and experienced teachers) and online videos, giving learners a sequence of hands-on, engaging experiments.
The B4 Learning System supports both primary and secondary schools through dedicated course kits, tailored to match students’ cognitive development and the requirements of the Digital Technologies curriculum.
The B4 family of kits
-
B4 Primary Starter Kit — designed for younger primary students, this entry-level kit introduces the fundamentals of binary numbers, switches, and simple logic through playful, hands-on activities. It builds confidence with core concepts and sets the stage for deeper learning in later years.
-
B4 Spark — a compact, streamlined kit for upper primary and secondary students. With 16 missions, Spark guides learners through binary, arithmetic, memory, and program control — providing everything needed to meet Digital Technologies requirements on digital systems and data representation. B4 Spark is extensible with graphics and advanced memory.
-
B4 Classic — a comprehensive system with additional modules and extensions (including graphics, algorithms and advanced memory). Classic supports enrichment programs, STEM clubs, and advanced courses where students explore computing in greater depth, linking hardware design to programming and system architecture.
-
Extension Kits — expand Spark or Classic into new areas such as graphics, algorithms and memory, allowing schools to extend the learning journey and adapt to different cohorts.
